About GrowSave

GrowSave is a knowledge exchange programme helping both farmers and growers save energy

Why is the GrowSave project in place?

Starting in 2007, the GrowSave project is a dedicated knowledge exchange programme with the goal of helping farmers and growers save energy through facilitating access to the latest technical information on energy saving techniques, technologies, and innovation. For most of the project’s lifespan, it has focused on Controlled Environment Horticulture (CEH), as it is a sector with high proportional energy costs and complex challenges due to climate control. However, content has also been delivered to the cereals, dairy, pork, and potato sectors.

Why does it matter?

It is estimated that there are about 2,000ha of protected fruit and vegetables production in the UK. Although a comparatively small industry, covering about 700 hectares, protected vegetable production alone in the UK represents a market value of £371 million (2022 Defra horticulture statistics).
The pressure on energy costs has increased considerably, and with the huge volatility and seen in the energy market over the last 4 years, efforts to support the sustainability of food production are more important than ever.
Over the years GrowSave has helped support the industry in efforts to reduce energy use and cost by sharing information and best practice on ways to improve business performance, increase efficiencies in energy and climate control, and reduce carbon emissions. This has included a wide range of topic areas, from managing lighting and humidity, through to outlining options for alternative energy production, some of which can be applied across horticulture sectors and beyond.

How is it delivered?

The project is delivered by a committed team of NFU Energy specialists, engineers, and external expert CEH steering committee, whose expertise extends beyond protected cropping into other horticulture and agriculture sectors.
The project delivery has been built around a flexible programme which enables us to respond to emerging challenges or topics that the industry would benefit from the most.
