The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, which aimed to promote the adoption of renewable heating technologies in the UK, has officially ended. The opportunity to benefit from renewable heat technologies and remain compliant with the scheme’s regulations, however, still remains.
We will lay out how you can still benefit from the scheme and remain compliant:
Buy an RHI accredited boiler
One of the fundamental goals of the RHI scheme is promoting the utilisation of renewable heating technologies, including those featuring RHI accreditation. Even beyond the deadline of the RHI scheme coming to an end, there’s still an opportunity to benefit from this scheme by purchasing an already accredited boiler, but you must ensure the heating system aligns with the RHI’s eligibility criteria. By investing in an RHI-accredited boiler, you can still significantly reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy the financial incentives that the scheme offers.
Recalibrating your meters
In order to remain eligible under the scheme, it is essential to maintain accurate measurements. You are required to ensure that your heat meters are calibrated to preserve the integrity of the data used to calculate your RHI payments. Make sure you recalibrate your meters every ten years to guarantee precision in recording the heat generated by your renewable heating system.
Replace your boiler and still receive your RHI tariff
Thinking of replacing your existing boiler with a newer, more efficient one? You can do this and continue to receive your RHI tariff! You can install a smaller boiler and your Tier 1 allowance will shrink to the new boiler’s capacity, or you can install a larger boiler and your Tier 1 will remain the same as the original. However, it is paramount that you ensure the heating system remains compliant to continue enjoying the benefits.
Ofgem audits
Periodic audits by Ofgem, the regulator of the RHI scheme, are part of the program’s accountability and transparency measures. These audits are done to verify the accuracy of the data provided by RHI scheme participants and ensure ongoing compliance with the scheme’s rules and regulations. Make sure you are prepared for these audits by maintaining meticulous records. Do this and you can navigate them smoothly and continue to receive your RHI payments without interruptions.
Amend your RHI application when you make changes to your system
When you make any significant changes to your renewable heating system, such as upgrading the pipework or adding other boilers, Ofgem require you to update your RHI application within 28 days of making the changes. This ensures your RHI payments remain accurate and compliant with any alterations.
The RHI scheme, despite its official closure, offers continued opportunities for businesses to adopt renewable heating technologies and reap the associated benefits.
